´╗┐Lies My Teacher Told Me - James W. Loewen

Chapter 5: GONE WITH THE WIND: The Invisibility of Racism in American History Textbooks

The chapter discusses the racial oppression of black people in this country. Loewen covers literature such as Uncle Tom's Cabin and Gone With the Wind and their roles in promoting the "magnolia myth." Of the twelve textbooks Loewen frequently refers to throughout the book, only five of them make any mention of race, racism, or racial prejudice. History books are finally catching up in their depiction of Reconstruction. Loewen also documents racial issues relating to athletics, Supreme Court decisions and attacks on black communities.
